The devolution of the March Hare

I will never ever as long as I live take for granted the ability to access hot water from a tap. Not having any for the last 6 days has done terrible things to me. Not only have we stopped cooking nice food due to the hassle of boiling kettles for washing up, we have also not done any clothes washing and my hair has only seen water and a brush once since last Friday morning. Aside from the physical affects, not being able to have a proper shower has made me feel like some sort of second class citizen. When I went to get Auntie Ignis' parking permit from the council on Monday I made sure I didn't get too close to anyone in the queue and couldn't make eye contact with the cashier behind the glass. I felt that if he looked me in the eye he would know I was a dirty stop out. I felt so ashamed.

But the worst symptom of not having hot water is a kind of red mist that seems to be hanging over me at the moment because of the ineffectual, unprofessional, moronic Boiler fixing company we made the misfortune of contacting. I cant remember a time when I have felt so angry, like I wanted to punch a wall. Or the Boiler repair man.

The chain of events that have led me to such fury are thus:

1. Saturday morning woke up with no hot water.

2. Called EDF to see if they could recommend a company to help since they supply my gas. EDF said they didn't have any recommendations but I should just look on the 'Gas Safe' website for a repair man. Thanks for your help as usual EDF.

3. Looked at the Gas Safe website who seem to think its a good idea for their repairmen to put pictures of themselves on line. This is an appalling idea. Judging these men by their photographs/mugshots I would not want them in my postcode let alone my boiler cupboard. They all looked like they kept body parts in their freezer.

4. I googled 'I have no hot water' to see what that would suggest. A company name popped up, Aspect Maintenance. I called their number and thats when my life got really red and misty. Aspect said they could send someone out but as it was a weekend it would be at a higher half hourly rate (of course) and that it would be for a minimum of 1 hour (naturally). So reluctantly, I agreed, and within 2 hours their boiler man had arrived.

The first impression was not good, he was wandering up along the road looking for a bush when I located him (he needed a p...). Then he came in and told me my boiler was broken. Then he said he didn't have the parts to fix it but I probably would need a totally new boiler system that would cost about £3K. More than than the new car. So, his 10 minute diagnosis had cost me £138.00. I'm going to retrain to be a Boiler Repair person. But rest assured, on Monday morning I would receive a quote for a new pump which might fix things temporarily and a quote for a new system which would definitely sort the problem out. I couldn't get it that day as the quoting people don't work on the weekends. Of course they don't.

5. Bright and early Monday morning I received an email from Aspect telling me that the Estimator could come round on Thursday earliest to give me a quote.??!!! Thursday??!! Before they can even do the quote??!! I never use this phrase, but OMG! And now I feel even worse about myself having used the phrase OMG!! So I called them and explained I had been told the quote would be with me on Monday AM ie now. "Hmm, I don't know why you were told that" they said. "The bloke that came round on Saturday wasn't qualified to do quotes" they added. "Or fix boilers apparently" I replied, or do anything except piss in bushes in broad daylight I thought.

So I booked the Estimator in and enquired about the cheaper, hopefully quicker to solve, option of a replacement pump. "Oh", they said. "A new pump? Let me find out". After what seemed like 3 hours but was probably only 5 minutes they came back online. "Yes we can do you a quote for a new pump". "Great!", I replied, "how much will it be then?". "I can't tell you over the phone, the Estimator will have to send this to you in an email".  WHHHYYYY???

So, an hour later the Estimator emailed me a quote for nearly £300. "Fine", I thought, "I dont really have much of a choice". So I called them and said "Yep. Thats fine, but how soon can someone can round to do the repair?". "Not until Tuesday between 12-2pm but if you did want to go ahead, I can't take the confirmation over the phone. You need to reply in an email. to the Estimator". F****ing ESTIMATOR!

(As you can probably tell, just thinking about it now is raising my blood pressure out through the top of my head like an invisible red fountain).

6. Tuesday, I waited in for the repair man but to be honest there was no way I could have left the flat even if I wanted to. My hair now looked like one of those seagulls that you see on telly thats been trapped in an oil slick. 12 o'clock came and went, as did 1pm and 2pm. So I called Aspect to find out where the repair man was. "Oh, you had it booked in for today? There's no record of it". "I sent an email confirming the booking to the Estimator, yesterday!" I yelped. "Please hold". I'm not ashamed to say it but my eyes started stinging at this point and I could feel myself getting very hot indeed. No hot water will do this to you. "Hello? I found your booking but Lindsay was looking after that and she didn't order the part for you. She's off today so there's no way anyone can come out today".

What an apalling company. Not only are they useless and obsessed with emails but they are more than happy to grass on their colleagues! By now I had lost the power of speech. "We can get it for you tomorrow and send someone between 12-2pm?". "I'll have to call you back", I mumbled. Then I hung up. And spent the next 10 minutes screaming/crying/punching thin air.

With no option, as I was already too far down the line with this company, I agreed to wait in again the next day and hope the repair man would turn up. And then I boiled 4 kettles and 9 saucepans full of water and had a 3 inch bath. Whilst it was not the most enjoyable bath I've ever had, nor the most flattering, it was AMAZING to have had a proper wash that didn't involve baby wipes or a flannel. So feeling clean and part of the modern world I felt ready to tackle the next day.

7. At 11:50am on Wednesday the repair man called, "Im on my way and will be with you at 12:30". He arrived at 1pm and told me he didn't have the right part to fix the god damn boiler!!! It was at this point that the will to live left me.

So now, its Thursday and nothing has progressed and waiting for the Estimator to show up who was booked in for 9am. Its now 10:31am.  I've called Aspect and they cant now get hold of the Estimator. He's probably sending some emails or looking for a bush to piss in. It's lucky I don't have a proper job at the moment with all the time I've had to spend at home this week. I feel all I've done these last few days is wait in for people who don't turn up, pay money to get nothing done, sit on hold on the phone, send emails that no one reads, punch thin air and fester indoors. Not exactly the best week of my life.

And as much as I love to give credit where credit is due and recommend places and companies that are enjoyable experiences or do a good job I'm afraid I also feel compelled to warn people of companies that will suck the life out of you and make you have murderous thoughts. So if you need a new boiler, do not under any circumstances call Aspect Maintenance. They are currently getting a minus infinity rating on the March Hare scale. I would not recommend this company in a billion gillion years, even to my worst enemy. On reflection, I  would much rather fancy my chances with the Body Part collectors from Gas safe. At least if they chopped you up and buried you in the freezer you wouldn't need any hot water.

I'm also blaming Aspect for my mild hangover today. I was so fed up with the weeks constant stream of let downs I accepted an invitation to drinks at the Secret Garden at Shoreditch House. If I wasn't so angry I never would have abused the complimentary bar like I did but at least I didn't take advantage of the pool and throw myself in for a quick wash. I hate Aspect Maintenance but Shoreditch House was nice and gets 7 free wines out of a possible 10.

Busy busy busy

It’s been a hectic old week for The March Hare, hence I haven't had time to write anything, but it's definitely been worth it considering how much The Wig and I have achieved.

After a shoot on Thursday we attended a friends Private View at the Soho Gallery on Charing Cross Road, opposite Foyles bookshop. I’m ashamed to say that after 5 years of working my sense of direction is as bad as ever as I got lost on the way from Wardour Street but at least it gave me the opportunity to take some touristy picture of Trafalgar Square.

Shaun Mills is one of The Wigs best friends and he is a great illustrator, I'm not just saying that. I think his work was the best at the viewing so if you or anyone you know is in line for any illustration work or just a nice print for home check out his work online.

Then on Friday a very exciting occurrence took place. The Wig and I bought a car! This has all happened very quickly since he only passed his test the Friday before but we are now the proud owners of a Suzuki Ignis. I’d never heard of this car before and it does look a little bit like a vehicle for someone with special requirements but we love it all the same. We have also named the car Auntie Ignis, after my Norwegian Auntie Vigdis who I think I met once when I was a baby.

Collecting Auntie from the dealer in Boreham Wood also gave us the opportunity of a little afternoon tea treat at Peyton and Byrne at St Pancras. I love this small chain of cafes not only for the delicious food but also because the shops look so lovely. If you are passing a Peyton and Byrne you really must try their sausage rolls, apparently the best in London although they do say so themselves…

Saturday was also a very productive day since we had our little kitchen painted finally. After 4.5 years of me regretting my hurried choice of paint colour when I moved in, I think The Wig made a superb decision with Farrow & Balls ‘Skimming Stone’. Since it looks like we wont be able to move anytime soon having the room decorated almost feels like a new kitchen. Almost.

Auntie Ignis really came into her own on Saturday too since we loaded her up with new garden furniture, a tiny shed and a composter so we also sorted the garden out and are now ready for BBQ season! Auntie may only be small but my god she has a spacious boot.

The only downside of all these good things happening over the last few days is that we have had to suffer the consequence of a bad thing which seems to be the way of life. Our boiler has well and truly conked out so we have been unable to have any hot water since Saturday. This really is not an ideal situation to be in particularly after a warm weekend of shed construction and gardening but considering the bolier is almost as ancient as me it’s a miracle that we’ve got away with it for so long.

Swine!

I'm not quite sure how this could have happened, but last week I was taken out for lunch and I completely forgot to mention it! I think that I was so busy feeling sorry for myself about being lonely that it slipped my mind that I had sampled the porky delights of Bodean's, "London's original BBQ Smoke House"!

http://www.bodeansbbq.com/

I have not been to Bodean's for a very long time and have only ever sampled the wares of the Soho branch, but its pretty delicious I can tell you. I was hoping to go there for my birthday a couple of weeks ago but it was so packed we couldn't get a table inside, outside or downstairs. I even begged them to let me in whilst wearing my ridiculous but obligatory "Happy Birthday" sun spectacles. I have no shame where pork related products are concerned and I don't care who knows it.

Nevertheless, perseverance eventually paid off and my friend and I managed to get ourselves a table last Wednesday, downstairs, in the dark, on the hottest day of the year by getting there nice and prompt at 12:30pm. It was absolutely worth it and we both enjoyed a cold ginger beer and the recommended lunch of the Soho Special. I would definitely go there again but you do have to get there early as its always very busy. You can order take away but its not quite the same, although they do sell their BBQ Sauce (£3.50 a bottle) to take home which is a complete treat for the taste buds.  So, Bodeans gets a big fat thumb up and scores 9 hog lumps out of a possible 10.

I must mention also, that not only is the food great and the staff really chirpy (even the waitress that wouldn't let me in), the decor is something worth seeing too. I wouldn't really know how to describe it since I have  not been sleeping well lately and my brain is a bit dead, so you really should check it out for yourself.  I suppose its sort of a Western / Rustler theme and it really reminds me of this place called Cliff Barns (amazing name) that I considered for a wedding venue before I realised it was in Norfolk. Now, if I could just work out a way to transport it to to Hackney . . . .

'Graham' and the garden

Well I must say that the scary Scarecrow is creating quite a buzz around town! Not only has he become a hot topic of conversation among the residents of E8, I also had a couple of enquiries to see a picture of him from as far a field as Soho!

Since he now has a small following, it seemed like a good idea that he should have a name, so let me introduce you to Graham. My upstairs neighbour thought of this name and it is perfect for this extremely grotesque monstrosity, coincidentally it is also the name of the horrid Freeholder that is currently making our lives so stressful. But that is mere coincidence...

Graham, the buzz...

Neighbour 1. "Hey there, I just clocked your scarecrow-its amazing-got really confused thinking it was someone doing tai chi with a particularly bad hangover. I genuinely love it. If he stays we should christen him Graham and smash a bottle over its head like they do with boats".

Neighbour 2. "I noticed your scarecrow over the weekend too, loitering in the back garden. Bit of a weirdo if you ask me, who watches foxes shagging with a mask on? Very odd"

Neighbour 1. "Come on mate, we've all done it..."

Me. "That wasn't the scarecrow, that was The Wig".

Neighbour 1."I was at the window, watching him, watching them, with night vision goggles".

I'm happy to say that Graham is actually doing quite a job so far though and we have not had any signs of cat or fox 'corks'/copulations since his erection on Saturday evening. So fingers crossed in a few weeks we'll see the signs of sprouting vegetables in our little patch! In the meantime though, other things are sprouting which I'm really happy about. Spring has definitely sprung.

The Scarecrow and The Lion

This morning The Wig and I planted some seeds in our tiny vegetable patch at the back of the garden as we have done for the last couple of years. And every year it has been a battle with the local squirrel/cat/fox population of Hackney who eat/dig up/crap all over our produce. It's a battle that we usually lose along with all our vegetables and self respect (I cried when a squirrel ate our pumpkin). So it was for this reason that we ramped up our 'Patch Protection' this evening and made the most terrifying scarecrow I have ever seen. It's so scary that The Wig and I are now too scared to go into the garden alone and shall be watering the garden in pairs for the foreseeable future. It will take a lot to scare off the local vermin, they appear to have no fear so desperate times call for desperate measures. I knew those plastic limbs from Matalan would come in handy for something other than sticking them in the fireplace at Halloween. We have also given the Scarecrow some entertainment/accessories of an Opera CD and The Spy Who Shagged Me DVD to keep him company/scare away the birds. It's times like these that I love the Daily Mail freebies.

I also made a lion soft toy/cushion this afternoon. While the rest of London was out getting sun on their chops I was inside watching National Lampoon in Las Vegas and sewing. It was a gift from The Wig from a new shop in Brighton which he cant remember the name of, but is made by a company called Mibo.

http://www.mibo.co.uk/mibo/catalog/index.php

The pattern for the toy/cushion is printed on some fabric which you can either use as a tea towel or make into the toy/cushion. A great idea for a present and I will definitely be getting the Fox version even though as a rule I absolutely hate foxes.
